Raw Feeding a Puppy
Why Raw Fed?
Getting a puppy comes with so much fun and joy, but it can also be stressful knowing what decisions to make for them at such a young age. The decisions you make now will potentially impact their health forever (at least that is how my brain thinks). We recently added an adorable new puppy into our household, Calypso aka Chunk. Our crew has welcomed her with open paws, and it seems like she was just meant to be part of our pack. Lucky for us, she has had 2 puppies before her that were raw fed since they came into our home, along with the older pups who have been raw fed for many years.
If you have followed our pack for any amount of time, you will know that we swear by a fresh diet for our crew. I have seen first hand benefits of how a raw diet has changed my dogs life for the better, and I will always feed raw/fresh if it makes sense for my dogs. So, it is only fitting that Calypso starts her life with us on a fresh diet also!
How I Feed a Fresh Diet for my Puppy
The longer I have fresh fed my crew, the more I realize how much easier it is to keep the guesswork out of it and keep things simple. I also like to use brands that I know have high quality standards. This is one of the many reasons I use Doctor Harvey’s food and supplements. Their food is as simple as measure, rehydrate, add protein and done. After Calypso’s first couple of nights with us, she caught on to how delicious meal time is.
- Dr. Harvey’s Canine Health base food
- Dr. Harvey’s Health and Shine Oils (I rotate between their varieties) or Coconut Oil
- Dr. Harvey’s Formative Years supplement
- fresh proteins – I have been using ground items for her as she gets used to more chunky/whole cuts
- Homemade Kefir or Goats Milk (I use Green Juju raw goat milk)
Since she is a growing puppy, I split her meals into breakfast and dinner. I normally make her whole day’s worth of food at dinner time and split half of it into a bowl in the fridge for the morning. This makes it easy and quick to feed her breakfast in the AM, and gives me more time to make my morning brew. I also feed the big pups a raw egg + kefir or goats milk in the morning, along with some Solaris.
It is that Simple!
It really is that simple to feed a fresh diet to Calypso. It is even better that as she grows her diet with grow with her. I am so excited for her to start trying new proteins outside of ground up items, and to start introducing her to organ meats! I feel a Cherry Valley Holistics and Raw Feeding Miami order being placed soon!
